1. CGI (Perl) Programming

CGI brings interactivity to your page such as Discussion Forums, Chat Rooms, Visitors books, Mailing Lists etc. There are many ready made scripts on the web and, with a small amount of modification, are ready to use on your page. However, you do have to have permission from your ISP to use them. If you have a CGI bin in your web space it is likely that you have this permission. If you are not sure check with your ISP.

1. What the Heck is CGI?
Introduction to CGI programming with Perl from Scripts for Educators written by Kristina Plaff-Harris

2. CGI for the Total Non-Programmer

2. Flash

1. Geoff Dellow's web site provides assistance for teachers wanting to learn Flash See:

http://www.tygh.co.uk/contact.html

There are also good templates which are free to download and make good starting point for beginners. Geoff is looking into the possibilities of providing online training in Flash for teachers. Geoff also places emphasis on how Flash can be used to assist the understanding and development of mathematical concepts in children.

2. Flash Bible: several tutorials on using Flash. You can learn how to create your own flash enabled page with the help of Interactive tutorials. Good animated tutorial but, in my opinion, a little too much too soon for the beginner.

3. Webmonkey - Shockwave Flash
A really good site. Explanations and guides to the world of Flash creation. Suitable for beginners and more experienced users.

4. Macromedia's own tutorials for creating content using Flash - everything you need to create Flash enabled pages.

5. Flashplanet.com' s web site has excellent step by step tutorials for all levels of user from the beginner through to the most advanced user. An impressive site.

6. EchoEcho.com's web site for beginners. I like this site because it starts from the beginning and explains the different forms of animation on the web and the advantages of Flash. Takes you through gently and in easy stages how to create dynamic web sites using Flash.

3. HTML

1. A straight forward and simple "let's get you started" introduction to HTML from Southwold Primary School

2. a. www.hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey [1 recommendation] and

    b. hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/kids [1 recommendation] - this is such a
great site - lessons on web site building, projects, activities and tools. Good
    for adults too!

3. Introduction to HTML

4. Forms and obscurities

6. Ezines

The word E-Zine is an abbreviation for the term Electronic Magazine. An E-Zine is an email newsletter. An E-Zine is mailed directly to you via email. The E-zine comes to you.

A Web Zine is a magazine that is published on the Web.  You, the consumer, must go to the Website to read the magazine.

Ezines and web zines add interactivity to your web site and help create a community.

Here is a web site which will get you going with ezines and web zines:

10. Paint Shop Pro 7 for Beginners

This tutorial includes:

  • How to get started  - creating a new image
  • Colour explained
  • Drawing pre set shapes
  • Node editing
  • Text
  • Optimising Photographs
  • Useful Paint Shop Pro Web Sites

The pre set shapes instructions are based on the "Product Tour" which can be found in "Help" of Paint Shop Pro. The tour is excellent and introduces you to many aspects of Paint Shop Pro and I would recommend it. However I did find it a little quick and difficult to remember, hence the notes. I think the tour probably would have benefited from being interactive.
